I live in a condo in the suburbs of Chicago, and I got a quote from an hvac company for replacing my air conditioning unit. I was told it would be better to replace than to fix my current AC system because it has a leak, and R22 refrigerant is getting ridiculously expensive.
My system is set up with an AC machine on the roof of the condo building, and a blower/furnace in a closet inside my unit. The machine inside my unit heats water pipes that run through the floor, and create radiant heat. I'm told that if I want to upgrade to the new refrigerant, I'll have to replace both the roof top machine as well as the one in my unit, and because the setup I have is atypical, it will be a bit more expensive. Not that I think the company is trying to pull a fast one on me, but I'd like to know if their quote is reasonable.
The following is what they listed as the work items:
1) Recovery and disposal of refrigerant per EPA guidelines.
2) Disconnect and remove existing DX-hot water unit from residence.
3) Disconnect and remove existing air cooled condenser from residence.
4) Flush refrigeration line set.
5) Install (1) one York condensing unit which includes:
• 2 tons of cooling
• Low ambient kit
• 13 SEER
• R410A refrigerant
• 10 year manufacture parts warranty
• 10 year manufacture compressor warranty
6) Install (1) one Guardian DX-Hot Water fan unit which includes:
• 2 ton blower
• 5 year manufacture parts warranty
7) Install (1) one Honeywell digital programmable thermostat. 5 Year manufacture warranty
8) Reconnect sheet metal ducts.
9) Reconnect refrigeration piping.
10) Pressurize refrigeration system with dry nitrogen to check for leaks.
11) Evacuate refrigeration system of non-condensables.
12) Install a condensate drain and install EZ-Trap.
13) Reconnect electrical wiring.
14) Install R410A refrigerant.
15) Startup and adjust units.
16) All discounts applied
17) All work guaranteed for one year.
All of this was quoted to me for a grand total of:
Total Cost To Replace DXAHU & Condenser $7,582.68
Is this reasonable? I should probably also mention that I got a rough estimate from a different company in the area, and they also gave a ballpark price of $7,000. They're still working on getting me an official quote, however.
