LG Mini-Split system having a weird problem... looking for suggestions as to what it might be

I have an LG LMU187HV running two zones (LMN096HVT 9k BTU indoor units) installed in 2012. Other than a small leak not long after the initial install, the system has served us well for both winter heating and summer cooling.

But this summer has started with a weird problem: If I turn on one zone, the unit starts up, blows some cool air, then the indoor unit continues blowing while the outdoor unit compressor shuts down and the fan goes to either stopped or its lowest speed (and of course warm air blows inside). A little while later, the compressor comes back online and the line chills and I start to get cool air again, only to repeat the cycle. When it is cooling, it is doing a great job (45 F out for 80 F in) but overall I never get the room cooled more than a few degrees (took an 84 degree room down to 80, but no lower) But here's the surprise: if I turn on the 2nd zone and ask both zones to cool down to 64F, the compressor ramps up to higher speed and the thing will cool all day successfully (both rooms got down to below 64 easily)

No error codes on the outdoor unit to suggest why it is shutting down. I've read the troubleshooting manual and it seems that some of these issues require 5x/hour to trigger the error code, and it feels like that's about how often it it happening, but still no trouble code indicated.

Managed to repeat the problem twice while a tech was here looking at it today, but the pressures looked good and without an error code he didn't have anything to go on either.

Ran it all day today hoping that it would finally display an error code, but no, just did the run-a-bit, quit-for-a-bit thing and didn't cool the room significantly.
