This is a cross post with r/DIY, but the first post didn't yield the answer i was looking for...
We just bought this house and realized that the AC wasn't turning off after reaching the set temp. All roads lead me to believe the extremely old Mercury thermostat is shot so i purchased the 'easy install' Honeywell RTHL2310/RTHL221 series programmable digital thermostat.
Here is my situation: The heat is coming from a self contained furnace in the basement. The AC is coming from an older GE Heat pump outside of the house.
From what honeywell told me, we should wire it for the heat pump with 'emergency' heat from the furnace. My concern with this is that the heat pump will activate for heat when it hasn't been wired to do so in over 10 years. During the inspection when the heat was turned on, ONLY the furnace ran.
Does anyone have any tips or experience in this sort of thing that could help me figure out how to wire this? I want to keep the heat ONLY from the furnace and the AC ONLY from the heat pump to reduce the risk of screwing up any previous set up.
