I have a 20 year old home with the original HVAC system installed. Since we've owned the home (5 years), we've had the AC looked at twice (1st year and this year) and told it was low on refrigerant.
The AC just stays on significant portions of the day. Yesterday, it was 91 in Columbus, OH and the AC ran for 13 hours and never brought the house down to temp (Nest thermostat set to 75). The Nest is new this year, but the AC always stayed on with the old one as well so it's nothing the Nest is doing.
So, after having it looked at twice and still not being satisfied I decided to look into things myself. What I found is my AC unit is a 24000btu Trane (XE1000). My home is 1900 sq ft. From what I've read, this is undersized for my home by 12000 btu's.
So my questions are whether this is undersized and should I put up with this unit for a few years and then replace or should I just bite the bullet and do a whole HVAC replacement. The furnace is 20 years old as well. If replacement is the route to go.. any advice on financing it? We can't afford it outright. We have excellent credit so I'd assume there is some financing options.
Any advice would be appreciated!
