Open/close switch, what should I do in summer?

I have a open/close switch in my HVAC unit. I heard people saying that I have to change this switch to wither open or close in every summer and winter. Can you tell me what this switch do and what should I leave it on open or close for summer? I have a TRANE electric unit. Thanks
