So I had my 14 year old AC inspected and they said splits were OK, but capacitor and one fan motor (two AC units) is leaking oil.
How do I know when it's worth putting money for preventative and when to just let it run its course until a major repair comes up?
How can I tell when a new unit is going to save me money in lower bills? I mean if we are talking 20% savings and my average bill over a year is $100 then it's definitely pointless as the break even would be a decade!!
If it's worth extending the life of the system, should I do any proactive maintenance such as replacing both motors or anything else?
The fact I have an upstairs/downstairs system makes the replacement cost double, so I'd rather know this information ahead of time than be in a time crunch in the summer and make a bad choice if something blows up.
