Are heat pumps larger these days?

Totally just wondering. I just had a 2-ton heat pump installed, and it's very large. I don't care at all, since it's on the side of the house and I can't see it, but whenever I notice an older unit hooked up to a house my size, it's the size of a shoe box. Is it an efficiency thing? Or if I paid a bunch more money, would it have been smaller?
