The compressor on an older heat pump has gone out. The repairs I am hearing are all saying that R22 and lower Seer Compressors are no longer avail and therefore, the entire outside unit, air handler, lineset, etc. all need to be replaced. While I think the $3800 quote is reasonable for the full replacement (in the NE), I seem to have no problem locating new R22 outdoor units online for only a few hundred.
I would much rather spend a lot less and pay my tech more, but is there a reason he would be uncomfortable with that?
