ELI5: How to diagnose a problem with an AC unit

I'm not a handy man. I'm not a HVAC technician. I know nothing about an AC unit other than changing the filter and methods on how to clear the drain pipe if it's clogged. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

Just moved into the house two days. Inspector said the AC was in very good condition. The first day we moved in, the AC wouldn't drop the temperature below 77 degrees. It was running for hours and just wouldn't cool the place down. On further inspection, the filter was REALLY dirty so we changed it. I guess the people who we bought the house from decided they were not going to change it before they left. Anyway! After changing the filter, the AC started to work properly. It actually worked TOO well. Normally I set my AC to 70, but it was REALLY cold so I had to set it to 75 instead. So everything was working fine.

So normally I would turn the AC off when I leave for work, but yesterday I didn't turn it off because my grandmother was here and she wanted to help around with the house. When I came home, I noticed someone had set the AC to 70. However, the temperature of the house was reading 77. So I let the AC run at 70 for a few hours and it would not drop any lower than 76. I thought maybe the filter was dirty again, checked the filter and it was still clean. The air flow from the vents was perfectly fine. It just wasn't cooling the place off like it was the first two days.

So if you got through all that reading, what could possibly be wrong with the AC unit and how can I diagnose the problem? So far what I know is.

  • Filter is brand new and clean
  • Air flow is strong from the vents

Could it be possible that the unit iced up when my grandmother set it to 70? If so, how would I go about checking?
