So we moved into my girlfriends grandmothers house after she passed away. She had a 2-ton AC (i believe it's 2 ton. Its a small house and a relatively small unit). Her mother said that Grandma had it recharged every year as it has a leak. Sure enough we turn it on and we only get hot air. I look at the side and see it uses R22. So we call a tech out and he explains R22 is discontinued and it's more expensive. Once he gets here, I asked him about finding and fixing the leak, and he goes into how difficult it is with these older systems (the unit is from 2006 but I have no idea about the rest of it) and that a lot of times in these older houses when they install these units they use existing coils and they may be very old (house is from 1949) and it's just a huge pain because it could be leaking in many places. And that doing a whole inspection and fix isn't guaranteed to work because there are so many places it could leak from that you'll pay $150-250 for the repair work and it may still leak.
So I go to work and my girlfriend texts me that it was $380 for the refill and labor.
I found a 25 pound cylinder of R22 on Amazon for $300 + shipping. I think this unit needed like 3 pounds.
What happened? Did I just get a run around and fucked? Because I'm feeling fucked and they didn't even buy me a drink first.
