Looking to upgrade old thermostat - not sure if I can or not.

I'm really not sure the best board to ask this, but I'm looking to get a thermostat such as the Nest or some other kind of programmable/smart thermostat. Trouble is, I've got a very aged thermostat with wire colours that don't seem to match anything I've gone online, and Nest's customer support has contacted me back saying they don't know if it'll work or not.

Photo of my existing Thermostat's wiring is here.

The wires are (left to right on that picture)

R/V (white wire) I assume this is power

G-F (Black) This is connected to a fan Auto/Off switch on the outside of the unit.

Y-C (Red) This is connected to the Cool-Off-Heat switch.

W-H (Yellow) Also connected to Cool-Off-Heat switch

It's a fairly simple, old and frankly horribly inefficient central air system. Just curious to know if a smart thermostat would be possible without upgrading the whole system or not.

Thanks!
