Need advice replacing a through-the-wall AC

The house I currently live in came with a through-the-wall AC built into the living room wall. Yesterday it ceased to function in terms of cooling (the fan still works), so I'm guessing the compressor is blown. I'm looking to replace the entire unit, which is some type of 12,000BTU 115v Samsung but the kicker is that it's only about 20" wide. I've looked online and the "thinnest" through-the-wall AC I could find on my own was about 24". I'm thinking installing a portable AC in my patio slide door would be a much more cost efficient option and wouldn't require wall renovation to fit a new unit. I realize there's no real question in my post but any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
