Location: Denver, CO
Furnace Model: Carrier 58 MCB Gas Furnace
House: built in 2006 with original A/C and Furnace.
My A/C stopped cooling 2 weeks ago so I had a tech out. He recommended to just recharge the R-410A. Got the system cooling again after the recharge. 2 weeks later, back to no cooling. Had the same company back out. Given the assumption that a significant leak is present and the age of the system (10 y/o), he recommended a complete A/C replacement. Thoughts? Should I try to get someone that is willing to chase the leak or is replacement the best move long term?
Quoted ~$5,600 for a 14 SEER 92% 3.0 ton unit.
They also recommended that I replace the furnace, which I have not had any problems with, because at 10 years he said it was getting old and it's easier for them to do both at once. It should be noted that the current furnace has no aux drain pan (which the HVAC company said is not to 2006 code and shows that the HVAC contractor used by the builder cut corners). So one of the benefits of complete A/C and Furnace replacement is that they would install the aux drain.
Quoted ~$10,600 for both the A/C and a 92% single stage furnace installed.
Thoughts? Should I roll the dice and hope the furnace has some more life or just bite the bullet and replace it?
