My newly-purchased home was built in 1962. It has an air conditioning system in the attic, and a gas furnace in the basement. Each system has its own duct work, with the furnace using rectangular sheet metal, and the air conditioner using round tubes. Why wouldn't, when the systems were installed in the 90s (which I am guessing the installation date based on the equipment used), the metal duct work be used for both of the systems? I am also thinking of upgrading the systems, and would like to know if there would be any drawbacks to combining the two systems into one, and using the duct work from the basement for the air conditioning as well.
