In our lab class we have been working on HWT tanks changing out the pressure and relief valves. The way the teacher instructs us to do it is to flick the pin on the T&P valve to create a vacuum in the tank so when we take the valve completely out, no water should spill out. I have yet to see anyone do this in the lab successfully without having water pouring out all over the place for 5 seconds. Is this the correct way of doing it? I YouTube'd how to replace one and they would drain 5 gallons out of the tank so the water level was below the valve itself, which is what I assumed was the correct way to begin with.
