We have the opposite problem of most people with a two-story home: our upstairs is much colder than our downstairs when running the AC in the summer.
We have a 3000 sq. ft. house with a single AC zone. The air handler is located in the attic, which we have recently re-insulated with blown cellulose and air sealed. We also did a lot of air sealing through the rest of the house.
I have ecobee3 thermostats so I can see temperature throughout the house. On hot days, there can be a 5-10 degree difference between the upstairs and downstairs. For instance, right now, at the beginning of the day, it is 73 degrees downstairs and 69 degrees upstairs. Yesterday, towards the end of the day, it was 75 downstairs and 68 upstairs.
One room is particularly bad because of high ceilings. There are two registers in this room, both located right near a return which doesn't seem to make sense (wouldn't you be sucking that cold air from the registers right back out of the room?).
I've read about the dangers of closing registers, so am cautious to do so for those upstairs. I also don't want to have to close them all upstairs during the day and then open them again at night.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
