Retrofitting an old house with AC - mini splits, conventional, high velocity?

Posted on r/homeimprovement. I got some recommendations, but didn't really get a good comparison of these options. I'm planning to get quotes, but my understanding is that HVAC contractors usually specialize in one or the other of these systems, and so I'm not sure I can trust their recommendations (I think they'll recommend the system they sell). Already had this happen once.

I live in an old 2-story colonial with a full unfinished basement and attic. Only a hallway, bathroom, and 4 bedrooms on the top floor. No ducting. The main floor will be much more open after a renovation. The house has blown in insulation in the attic, but otherwise it's original windows and balloon framing - so not very well insulated.

I have received a quote for 2-unit central air for $12K a few years back. Quoted $5K for a big mini split for the main level. My mom loves her high velocity system, but it was expensive. My house would probably be an easier install, though.

Any suggestions on the route I would be happiest with from a comfort/efficiency/cost perspective?
