What's the best way to know if my whole house dehumidifier is working properly?

I have an Aprilaire 1850 dehumidifier, about a year old. I first kept it set at 50%. The hygrometer in my living room kept reading close to 60%. This was during winter months.

Well, the hygrometer always stayed 8%-10% higher, so but by but I cranked the dehumidifier to its lowest setting: 40%. Despite this, today my hygrometer is reading 61%.

I'm hoping it's just the hygrometer being buggy, but I have a few throughout the house all telling the same story.

I'd like to get a professional instant hygrometer, but they're out of my budget.

I was thinking maybe there's some kind of probe I can get to place permanently in the ducts by the dehumidifier to make sure it is reading accurately?

Any thoughts/input?
