Hey guys. I'm here in Toronto in the midst of this heatwave and ready to lose my mind. Keep in mind I am not very handy and an idiot when it comes to home repair and maintenance.
Quick context: We live in a very verticle condo/townhouse with two floors and a rooftop deck with its own own Air Conditioning unit and furnace. The unit is question is a Hunter stand alone AC and it sits on our rooftop. A few weeks ago during a warm day our unit stopped working. Upon checking i noticed it had flipped the breaker off in our main panel so I flipped it back and it kept going.
When the very warm weather arrived this week the issue ocurred again. Only now it would happen after a few hours of running. The temperature in our place has not been below 27 Celcius or 80 F. I had a technician come in on Monday night and he looked at the problem and determined that the capacitor should be replaced and that I needed to clean the outside of my unit with a hose and i've replaced the air filter. He replaced the capacitor and I managed to hose down the outside of the unit (this had probably not been done in a while- we are renting the property and have an absentee landlord). This appeared to help but only marginaly. Instead of setting off the breaker every 2-3 hours, it's now closer to 5-6.
The problem appears to be that our apartment is notoriously warm to begin with. Because of its exposure to the sun, the flat patio and the open 2nd floor that heats up like crazy. The Unit seems to be running hard but not doing much of a good job cooling the place down. So its a catch 22. It runs hard to cool the space down, which leads it to flip the breaker. Upon coming back the tech says that this is likely because of an old- inefficient compressor which is causing the constant breaker flip.
I am now seeing if my landlord will replace the compressor.
I am wondering if this seems like a plausible explanation or whether there is something more important thats wrong. Also if anyone knows of any tricks that will help my apartment cool down I would greatly appreciate it and so would my kick ass Pug named Morty, who is schvitzing!!!1
