Snow melt system, are they worth it for your home?

Let me preface this by saying, I am a pipefitter. I have 15 years in the trade but have spent the bulk of the last 8 years doing mainly process work. That being said, I have installed snow melt systems, but only in large commercial applications (hospitals, large residential/commercial buildings).

I am in the early phases of building a home, as In, we just started at the drawing board. I live in Chicago where we can get a fair amount of snow, but nothing too crazy. I have the potential to lay the tubing in the slab (or pavers thats undecided) if I decide to do so. Thing is, I dont know anyone that even has one. Im not sure if its worth the effort to install it, or the money for the tubing, water heater pumps, etc.

I was thinking about running the tube myself, and then deciding down the road if I want to add everything else to make it functional as well.
