Can switching from heating to cooling and back as the weather fluctuates damage or degrade a heat pump?

An in-law insists this is the case (based on something the HVAC installer purportedly told her), and consequently will not turn on the AC in her house until she is certain there will be no more "cold snaps" (meaning June, usually). This despite springtime temperatures often spiking into the high 80s.
