Newly installed Heat Strip Not Working.

I recently replaced my split unit HVAC this Summer. When I got my new AC, I didn’t get the heat strip to save money and figured I would just order and install it when it got cold. Well it’s cold... I installed a brand new 10Kw heat strip in the AC and it’s not heating.. The unit does not have any sort of heat pump so it uses the strip only for heating.

I turned the breaker off and pulled the disconnect. When I opened the unit, there was a plug pig tail thing with a red and black wire that was wire nutted to the mains 220 power line. The other end of the plug went to the circuitry. There was a sticker on this plug that said it was for use when no heat coil was being used. I removed this adapter and plugged the coil into that plug. The two male and female plugs fit together perfectly. Then I connected the mains 220 to L1 and L2 terminals on the coil. The L1 and L2 terminals had black wires branching from one and red from the other. I connected the black mains to the terminal with black wires, and the white mains to the terminal with red wires. I screwed everything back together, turned on the breaker and reconnected the disconnect.

The unit powers on and everything and the fan blows but its just blowing cold air. When I initially turned on the heat at the thermostat it said “heat pump” and the outside unit tried to kick on. I know it’s not a heat pump so I immediately turned it back off. I opened up the thermostat and flipped the little button on the inside to off heat pump and turned it back on and still no heat but the outside unit didn’t kick on this time. I tried flipping the other button on the inside for “Emergancy heat” too and still no heat.

Any ideas guys? Everything is basically brand new so I don’t think it could be an issue with malfunctioning components. It was late last night so I just went to bed and I’m at work until tomorrow so I didn’t get any pictures.
