We have a new house and went with a heat pump. I had spoken with our tech because the heat pump seemed to run for a long time. He said that it will run longer than a traditional furnace, which checked I google-foo, and it seemed legit.
We are in the middle of a cold snap now, and the auxiliary heat runs just as long if not longer than the heat pump, just to keep my house at 68 degrees. So, I did some investigative work and found that when the heat pump runs, the heat coming out of the vents is between 71 and 74 degrees. When the aux heat is on, one end of the system, the temps are between 93 and 96 degrees on the south end, and 71 to 74 degrees on the north end, with the air handler being in the middle of the house. I spoke to him about it, and he recommended partially or fully closing some vents on the south end, which I had already done with no change. He also suggested to just turn the fan on full time, saying "I have lots of customers that do this".
To be honest, I'm not buying it, and I think that there is a problem. Besides that, I don't want my blower running 24/7. If I have to do that, I may as well go back to propane, because any cost savings will be wiped out.
Is there anything that I can do to see what's going on? We are pretty rural, and there aren't many choices for HVAC in our area.
