White-Rodgers SST1000

I recently moved into a house that has a White-Rodgers SST1000 attached to the furnace. We had a HVAC guy over a few weeks ago looking at something and he basically said these systems are junk. I have zero knowledge in this space so I kind of have to take his word for it.

He removed the metal filters and stuck a traditional paper filter in and said that will work better. Now I'm not typically one to care but this new setup looks terrible.

So my question is can I just replace this with a bigger paper filter (https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-CF100A1025-4-5-Inch-Efficiency-Cleaner/dp/B071VD3NQR/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1507040211&sr=8-7&keywords=4%2Binch%2Bair%2Bfilter&th=1) and it will be fine, or should I put the metal filters back in? I have heard, no idea if it's true, that the paper filters can catch fire in this type of setup, any truth to this?
