Will bleach damage the evaporator coils and what are my options for a moldy smell?

Wife complained of a moldy smell coming from the vents yesterday and when I turned the AC on it was quite strong. Pretty sure it is mold but this just seemed to happen quickly...we ran the AC a few days ago and no smell. Also does not seem to come out with the heat on although I did not verify it.

Plan on calling a professional to come out but with Christmas it might be a few days and it is still relatively warm here in Houston. Any additional advice would be welcomed.

Here is what I have done so far...

  • Made a bleach solution, 1 part bleach 4 parts water with a little soap
  • Opened the access panel on top and sprayed solution on the what I think is the evaporator coils (looks like a giant radiator).
  • Unscrewed and open the access panel on the side then sprayed the other side of the coils
  • Made sure the drain was draining, did a quick wipe down of the drain pan and sprayed more solution
  • Poured some solution down the vertical pipe connecting the drain pan

Left for work and told my wife to wait a couple hours then check if the smell was still there.
