In the next couple of weeks I’ll be changing out some wall mounted 240V double pole mechanical (dial) thermostats which control baseboard heaters. My existing thermostats use a color code for wiring, Red=Line and Black=Load. My replacements use the L1-T1, L2-T2 designation. When verifying and labeling the 240V line-in feed in each of the electrical boxes, I discovered that all of the thermostats are wired backwards (Black=Line and Red=Load). Naturally for the new install I’ll follow the diagram on the new thermostats… but I’m curious what effect the backwards wiring had to the thermostat itself, or whether the line/load wires can be reversed without any issues with the thermostats.
