So last year near the end of summer my central air conditioner ran into some issues. One hot night in September, I turned it on (Honeywell Thermostat) when I got home. It turned on for about 20 minutes, then shut off (the central air was still on, but the unit outside (Trane XL 1200) was off, therefore the vents were just blowing non-cooled air. The house was not cooled. I called some HVAC dude and he came in here, did a lazy job of walking around and checking some stuff, said there were nothing wrong, and charged me $100. I can't immediately demostrate the issue because it was intermittent.
Here is the behavior and timeframe of the air conditioner:
TEMP 76 - 9:45pm: first turned on, outside air conditioner is on. Set temp to 70
TEMP 73 - 10:05pm: outside off
TEMP 74 - 10:15pm: outside on
TEMP 72 - 10:30pm: outside off
TEMP 75 - 11:15pm: outside finally back on...
TEMP 72 - 11:39pm: outside off
It was near the end of season, so I thought I'd pack it up for the winter and wait until summer again. Well guess what happened last night, it was intolerably hot again first time this year, and same thing happened, only this time after it was on for 25 minutes, it went off and never turned on again. Anybody have any idea what's wrong? Is it because of overheating? What should I do, should I hire somebody to tune it up or fix it?
Any help would be REALLY appreciated since my wife would kick my ass if I don't get this fixed ASAP for the kids.
