How loud is a window air conditionner?

Hi all, I just recently bought a window air conditioner, it is my first. To my surprise, it is extremely loud, I bought the Haier HWE08XCR, 8000 BTU. I tried to measure the noise level of the AC using Android apps like sound meter. I know that it isn't very accurate (depending on your position, your device's microphone, etc). But it could be a point of reference, (Oneplus One, positionned right below the AC unit). It would be great if anyone could tell me what is the noise level of THEIR ac. At ambiant, my room's noise level is about 40dB. When I turn on the AC, it goes up to 63 dB at high fan speed. at low fan speed, I get 61 dB. The thing that suprise me the most, is, I use the unit on Fan mode, and it is actually as loud as it is even in cool mode. Assuming that fan mode = no compressor and cool mode = compressor.

I have to turn the sound of my TV fairly high to be able to hear anything. It was a pain to get it to my apartment, and it would be a pain to return. If this is a "normal" noise level, I guess I'll bear with it, but if my unit is defective, I would return it.
