My AC froze up so I had a guy come and check it out he found that the filter dryer was installed backwards and thought that might be part of the problem so he replaced it. After the replacement was complete he told me that wasn't the problem and he believed that the desiccant from the filter drier has leaked into my system and cause a restriction in the coils. He highly recommended that I completely replace the entire system. He did say I could try a TXV replacement for $789 but chances were the desiccant was in the system and it would need to be replaced anyways so that would be a waste of money. He had a guy come out within 30 minutes who ran my credit then quoted me over $6,000 for a total replacement. I wasn't happy about the idea of a complete replacement because my American Standard unit was only five years old. I called the company that originally installed the the system after coming out they hooked up their equipment and told me that it was obviously the TXV (low suction high head pressure he said) and the previous company should have realized that. He told me the filter drier has filters on both sides and would never cause a problem even if installed backwards. They replace the TXV and I haven't had a problem since. A few days later I got a credit card in my name that says it was opened by the first company. Is that standard practice? They missdiagnosed my problem, made unessasary repair and tried to get me to buy a whole new system. Is this a con or did the tech make reasonable assumptions based on the situation? Should I go after a refund?
