Wifi thermostat short cycle

I bought a sensi and a Honeywell wifi thermostat to replace our existing thermostats. On our old thermostats we could adjust the thermostat so that it would only turn on after a X degree drop. On these new ones there is no way to set this. Sensi has a slow cycle option but still does little. The Honeywell model has an adjustment for heating cycles but not cooling. They both have a tight range so what happens is today they ran for about 8-9 min and shutdown for about the same time. Before, our units would run for about 20 min and shut off for 20 min. #1 this is wasteful on electricity and #2 it seems like this will damage our compressors. I like the option of setting temps on our phone but this isn't acceptable imo. The manufacturers of these models boast about the comfort level with disregard for the equipment. Has anyone else had this experience and what did you do? Go back to the 'dumb' models?
