Hi all, hoping I can get some advice from some HVAC experts here. First to get the basics out of the way:
I’m currently living in Germany. Generally where I live doesn’t get too sweltering hot and having AC is therefore relatively rare, but after 4 years here (originally from the US), the heat has finally gotten to us and has been preventing us from being comfortable in the summer. Yesterday I came across a good deal on a portable AC unit and I’m currently waiting (quite inpatiently) for it to be delivered.
In order to vent the AC, I will be feeding the hose through one of our glass-doors by leaving the door open, but closing the automatic blinds on the outside, except for a small 4-5in. tall and window-spanning piece of plexiglass with a hole in it where the hose will attach. Kind of like this, but the window goes all the way to the floor as all of our windows are like this: LINK. The room where the AC will stand is roughly 40m2 (430sqft), which seems to work well with the BTU output listed.
After ordering it though I started reading more about single-hose portable ACs and how their usage unfortunately leads to lower pressure in the room it’s cooling; and generally due to warmer air then being sucked in through the room, the cooling efficiency is not all that great. As I’m still not in possession of the thing, I can’t say for certain that it won’t work well in my apartment, but I can see that being the case in theory. I’m therefore debating on whether or not I should exchange it for a dual-hose device as the air is then not being sucked out of the room and blown outside. Otherwise I am thinking that by putting the unit outside on my balcony and finding a way to funnel the cool air inside, this would alleviate the problem. Getting the cool air coming out of the front grates to all go one place is tricky though. Anyone have any other ideas that could work? Should I spring for the dual-hose system instead? Those are sadly a lot more expensive, so I’d really like to be able to “hack” something together to get this single hose system to work.
Unfortunately the obvious solution of buying a window AC or springing for a split-air system won’t work, as in my rental apt, I’m not allowed to hang anything out the window or attach to the outside of the building. Plus major construction work like boreing massive holes into the outside wall is also frowned upon...
Thank you all in advance for your help!
